The National Disability Research Partnership (NDRP) is an Australian initiative dedicated to advancing research that improves outcomes for people with disabilities. By bringing together researchers, policymakers, and advocates, the NDRP plays a crucial role in shaping policies and practices that advance the rights of people with disability. As an emerging entity with a clear mission, NDRP needed a full IT environment build. They reached out to The Virtual IT Department (VITD) due to our proven expertise with not-for-profit organisations.

Challenges

The NDRP was birthed from a research initiative from Melbourne University and therefore needed assistance building their technology environment from the ground up. This meant building not only for today’s needs, but for future requirements as they grew. They required hardware, software, and phone systems, all while ensuring adherence to cybersecurity best practice. Our challenge was to ensure the IT environment was scalable, sustainable and functional from day one to cater for their immediate technology needs and those of their future size and shape.  Given the critical nature of NDRP’s work, the project implementation needed to deliver a fully resourced environment for an emerging business.

Solutions

VITD took the lead in designing and building the entire IT environment for NDRP. This included building their Microsoft 365 tenancy and migrating source data, setting up the 3CX phone system, and procuring all necessary hardware. Their environment was built to align with the Essential Eight, Level 1 security framework, ensuring they were best positioned to operate within a secure environment. LastPass password management was integrated to enhance security further. These solutions not only met all functional requirements from the outset but also built a foundation to help to reduce costs downstream.
